Can someone please explain to me how this works - and does it recreate a realistic three dimensional representation? Is this process likely to be used in the future to make films?
I have a fascination.

Donald, I went to the little Google window on my browser, typed in "How do Holograms work?" and hit return. The Google search found 2,720,000 articles -- an approximation, I'm sure.

Apart from Bob's wonderfully intellectual post which only goes to prove that he must have gone to University and received a PhD - and of course for which I thank him; I wonder if anyone could elaborate further on the process as I don't think it actually comes under the heading of "holography" per se, moreover it is a modified and very much a state of the art "Pepper's Ghost" like effect.
Much thankings.

The Michael Jackson thing you saw is a very elaborate "Peppers Ghost" magic effect done with animation, projectors, mirrors, and has nothing to do with Holograms.

Science aside, wasn't the Michael Jackson thing done at least partly with an impersonator? It's not a return from the dead as some rabid fans had hoped.....
