New AUNTIE MAME in the works

He might have seen them on stage in Chicago. Marx family owned a house in Chicago from 1914 to 1926 and they did appear on stage locally.

The Marx Bros. were HUGE stage stars in the 1920s touring constantly in both vaudeville and their Broadway musicals I'll Say She Is, The Cocoanuts and, having just opened in NYC when Patrick and Norah arrive, Animal Crackers.Lamar wrote:He might have seen them on stage in Chicago. They specifically bought the house in Chicago to be centrally located to the train lines so those vaudeville engagements were easier to get to than, say, living in NY. I didn't suggest they weren't HUGE stars.

Interesting and yes they were stars before they started films. I don't have the book now but I wonder if that Marx Brothers reference is in the novel or if it was added to the play or screenplay. For all its 20s and theatrical atmosphere, there's not really a lot of real-life show biz references in the story. Helen Hayes is mentioned. I can't think of anyone else......
