When they gave Garbo hers, she didn't show; when they floated the idea of giving Karloff one, he essentially told them where to put it (a Union man to the end.)

As for Garbo's honorary Oscar, I always wondered where it was kept, in her home. I read that, when someone asked her about it, she replied: "oh, it's in a shoe box somewhere." Perhaps she used it as a doorstop.

Nancy Kelly, nominated for The Bad Seed accepted the honorary Oscar for Garbo, "who at 49 was the youngest ever to receive that Award." Kelly stated "In a year where there can be more than one Kelly, there can only be one Garbo."

There was some comment later somewhere, about Garbo never having gotten one.

She responded, "I have one, in a cupboard."

I've been miffed since the Academy took the special awards off the menu for the regular broadcast and made them part of the Governors' awards. Of course, I lost a lot of respect for the honorary awards when they started giving them out to just anyone (Steve Martin.......Steve Martin??).

I suppose so. It seems to be an excuse not to fund his projects. "You have an Oscar. What more do you want?"

MOMA has its Oscar on display in the east entrance.

They redeemed themselves when they gave that special Oscar for special effects to the '76 KING KONG.

Folks who continually look to find Total Artistic Integrity in what has always really been a Let's Pat Ourselves On The Back company award are destined for disappointment.

The best one: Shirley Temple was on stage and received an award (oscar?) from Louis B. Mayer. After receiving the award she turned to her mother and said "Mommy, can we go home now"?
