Love Bob's comment!
I have never seen a single one of Lewis' films and probably never will. But you've got to respect someone who never made a film that didn't turn a profit. However puerile they may be.

I defy anyone to sit through MONSTER A GO-GO. Even the gang on MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE agreed it was the worst thing they'd ever seen....
Re: Herschel Gordon Lewis Dead at 90
But the title's a winner. I'm picturing a gorilla suit with a Quebec stove balanced upside-down on its shoulders as a head, and wearing the cutest white go-go boots with a little fringe of tassles all around them. The Blackbird wrote:I defy anyone to sit through MONSTER A GO-GO. No, no, no... the film is infinitely weirder than that.
Re: Herschel Gordon Lewis Dead at 90
"There was....no monster...."
Did HGL actually make Monster a Go-Go, or did he just buy the remains of some unfinished Grade Z horror film and somehow get it into theatres?

He picked up the footage that had been shot years earlier, and completed it, for want of a better word. This is why the entire cast up and changes half-way through the film. Also, of course, the movie doesn't end, it just stops....

I admire that later, when he was a direct mail guru and consultant, although he didn't advertise that he was THAT Herschel Gordon Lewis, he wouldn't deny it either and would happily chat about his Gore-Gore days.I have never seen a single one of Lewis' films and probably never will. Think there's an extra 'l' in 'Herschell'... And I've not seen any, either...
Re: Herschel Gordon Lewis Dead at 90
The deluxe Shock and Gore video set is on its way to me now. I can't wait to see it. There's some wonderful extras, including extensive interviews with David Friedman about the world of exploitation filmmaking and the 40 thieves.

Re: Herschel Gordon Lewis Dead at 90
I received my set yesterday and it's quite a package. Besides the films themselves, the supplements are really great. The original Something Weird documentary, THE GODFATHER OF GORE, is quite enjoyable......and the 1 hour and 9 minutes of out-takes from it! It's presented at 1080i on Blu-ray.
The films themselves are a mixed bag, some restored from camera negatives (mostly done by Something Weird Video in the past) and some from battered prints. A few have combined elements from prints and tape sources to present the most complete versions. They've also included both 1.85:1 and 1.37:1 framing for some of the titles.
The folks at Arrow Films really put some work into this project, building on the efforts of Something Weird to date.

I received my Shock and Gore box yesterday. The Steven Thrower book is fantastic. Incredible images and a film by film explanation... even a couple that Lewis started but never finished. I'm glad I got the bigger box for that book alone.
