Blu-Ray from Kino Lorber "The Adventures of Captain Marvel"

Post by MaryGH » Thu Dec 15, 2016 12:10 pm

It's about time "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" got the Blu-Ray treatment:

Kino Lorber Studio Classics have announced that they're releasing The Adventures of Captain Marvel on Blu-ray and DVD in early 2017. No word yet on whether this will include any special features, or how it will differ from the most recent DVD release from Artisan Entertainment, but Kino Lorber are known for the care they put into obscure releases like this, so if nothing else, it should look great.

While it is always welcome to see a serial get a nice quality release on DVD and Blu-Ray, the Artisan DVD release is excellent quality already. Why not some other title(s) that have never gotten a good transfer from original 35mm elements?

Multi-disc sets are a hard sell on blu-ray. I have Green Archer, Green Hornet Strikes Again, Les Vamires, and Commander Cody. So there are some more obscure ones being released. It all depends on the quality of the elements though.

I'm all over this! Captain Marvel is one of the all time great Republic cliffhangers. If licensed from the studio's rights holder this will likely be sourced from archived 35mm elements. That'd be fantastic!

There are so many great serials that have languished for decades, often only available for viewing as well worn 16mm dupes or transferred to VHS/DVD public domain knock-offs. Hopefully there are enough serial fans supporting this effort to justify more such releases (ergo Daredevils of the Red Circle, Spy Smasher, Dick Tracy series, Drums of Fu Manchu, etc.)

Awesome news for the serial afficianado.

Well, my 16mm serials are all great condition prints from studio negatives. And Republic issued all of their owned serials on VHS from 35mm prints. The serial market - like the golden age soundtrack market - is dwindling faster than a plunger's chip stack. CAPTAIN MARVEL is a "big title" and could be seen as a test release to see if more serials are worthy of release from official sources. Otherwise, be grateful for the Blairs at VCI who have done so much to bring best-quality-available prints of public domain (and some licensed from CBS) serials.

By the way - in March we'll be bringing back Shazaturdays at Shadowland!

The Image release was sourced from 35mm and is excellent quality. Olive Films, the licensee from Paramount, who owns the Republic library, has released several Republic serials on DVD/Blu sourced from 35mm material---their next release is
PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO (1955) starring Phyllis Coates. Virtually all of Olive Films releases are gorgeous quality,
sourced from clean 35mm elements.

Actually we are in a much better place with excellent quality serials available on DVD than ever before.
Some of the releases I've shown at my home theatre are gorgeous transfers of:

BATMAN & ROBIN (1949) SONY/COLUMBIA
SUPERMAN (1948) SONY/COLUMBIA
FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE(1940) VCI
CAPTAIN MARVEL (1940) IMAGE
KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED (1940) VCI
BOTH GREEN HORNET SERIALS (VCI)
DICK TRACY SERIALS (VCI)
THE INVISIBLE MONSTER (1950) OLIVE
FLYING DISC MAN FROM MARS (1950) OLIVE
GOVT. AGENTS VS. PHANTOM LEGION (1951) OLIVE

Sadly, MOST of the serials of the sound era do not survive in clean 35mm elements, the victims of either studio vault fires and neglect. Hopefully more will turn up, either from archives or from private collectors or their estates. When I collected 35mm, even in the 1980s I used to see 35mm complete serials on the collector market.

The VHS releases by Republic suffered from the limited resolution of old tape and video, and while 16mm original prints are great to have--and in many cases the best quality available on some titles, there is nothing like a transfer sourced from 35mm.

Unlike most of the other studios, the Republic library is intact in very good to excellent condition (with the exception of some titles that reverted to the copyright owner, such as CAPTAIN AMERICA). Sadly, with the exception of MARVEL, no one bothered officially releasing any from these good source materials on DVD. Paramount is now in the process of doing high definition scans of the Republic library, which is great news. Hopefully, Kino can license more, although their representative states that they have no plans for further releases at this time (after RED CIRCLE and MARVEL). I love the fact that Olive is releasing some, but have been disappointed that they have chosen the later (and in my opinion, inferior) titles. Who would have ever dreamed that we would see serials on bluray? It's pretty amazing despite the paucity of releases thus far!

These points are dead on. Olive did a good job with the serials they've thus far released, but most of the post '49 Republic serials do not represent the Studio's best efforts. By this time Universal had already dropped out of serial production and Columbia's efforts ...with rare exception... were pretty much retreads of earlier efforts plot-wise with very cheap FX. Republic kept the their production level reasonably high in the early 50's, but the plots got lamer and reuse of effects, cliffhangers and Lydecker designed props made their latter efforts appear half-hearted at best.

Daredevils of The Red Circle ('39) certainly deserves Blu-Ray treatment. A haunting musical theme by William Lava, first rate FX by the Lydeckers, convincingly evil Charles Middleton, inventive cliffhangers and stunt work ...most involving co-starring actor and stuntman Dave Sharpe... make this 12 Chapter treasure a key example of Republic's serial productions in their prime.

While the Captain Marvel serial is a no-brainer BD purchase, it has been readily available on DVD in decent quality. The last time DoTRC was legitimately released to the video market from good elements was on VHS through Republic Home Video back in the 80's.

If KINO is seriously testing the water for future Blu-Ray serial releases, Daredevils would be an excellent choice. In fact, I'd recommend buying multiples as gifts for vintage movie loving friends as an excellent introduction to Republic's serials. Daredevils of The Red Circle's fast pace and cleverly devised cliffhangers belies it's modest budget. Genuine fun, especially taken a chapter at a time over a period of days or weeks.

Serial fans probably already know this, but in the past few years a bunch of really good DVDs have popped up. I wasn't focused as much on serials after the early DVD days, but recently I did a run through Amazon and was very happy to find both low prices and very good quality on quite a few good series. It's worth grabbing some of these, because they may never make the transition to HD. Some barely made it to VHS.

Nice to see more posts about this particular Blu-Ray disc and of course serials in general.

I asked Kino Lorber about "Jungle Mystery" through their Facebook page and from what understand they do not work with Universal (licensing) for whatever reason. But I still have them in mind for (hopefully) another film (yes, Tom Tyler) that I really think should be released on DVD that is not yet available.

With 2016 drawing to a close, 2017 could be very good for Mr. Tyler as it was this year. No shortage of hopefulness along with all the time and energy spent on him (my husband keeps asking me when I plan on adopting him lol) not to mention money (which always seems to be the most important part for some reason). I can look back and honestly say it has been worth it.
