Remembering Lya De Putti

This Novemebver 27 marks the 88th anniversay of actress Lya De Putti's tragic death. Lya was a Hungarian actress who had some success playing a vamp during the 1920s but her thick accent ruined her career. She died at the young age of thirty-four after a bone became lodged in her throat.

Lya is quite prominent in my 1926 Paramount Pictures release calendar. She was in D.W. Griffith's The Sorrows of Satan and this now-lost Herbert Brenon film (also known as Fate Gave Me 20 Cents, for those markets where blasphemy was a concern).

I was always happy to hear Sally Bowles (as played by Liza Minelli in CABARET) talk about her with envy....
