The 1936 Show Boat will be released to Blu-ray and DVD by Criterion on 31 March. Like Swing Time a few months ago, it marks the return of a well-loved 1936 musical to the collection, Show Boat having been LaserDisc #44. Miles Kreuger's commentary is brought forward to the new discs.

The 1929 version will be represented by excerpts, but not the entire film.

Looks like much of what was on the laserdisc is being carried over, though a shame they didn't make it the full 1929 version this time (such as it is). Still, good to have those goodies.

Show Boat on Blu-ray by Criterion will be a must purchase from me, I used to have the Laserdisc ages ago which included the 1929 version. Makes me wonder why it was no included as an extra. Besides that, and Leave Her To Heaven, I am so happy that Criterion is also releasing The Cranes Are Flying on Blu-Ray as well.

The review mentions FOUR numbers from the 1929 - presumably Bledsoe's "Ol' Man River" and Morgan's "Bill" to complement the two Tess Gardella numbers. I'll wait until i know for sure that the two additional numbers are included in full with complete picture and sound elements, but this sounds promising.

Does any kind member here know if there is a UK distributor for Criterion Blurays yet?

I would LOVE to get this new retsoration of SHOW BOAT (and also Dodsworth, another 1936 classic) but Amazon shows neither disc on its UK site and I cannot find any other supplier in the UK that does.

I have indeed. However the postage is very high and usually, the customs duty adds another hefty amount on top which makes it ridiculously expensive for a single disc, sometimes double the unit price. That is why I was hoping there might be a UK based supplier or distributor that posted discs from within the UK.

Because Eureka/MoC (and other companies) often release the same titles in the U.K. that Criterion puts out in the U.S., I'm guessing Criterion doesn't want to team up with an overseas distributor. Especially where their titles all seem to have region-coding specifically for North America. The hassle of occasionally selling to customers who don't understand they need a multi-region player probably isn't worth it.

The Criterion Showboat BluRay improves the viewing experience immeasurably over the Warner Archives DVD. One can gain new appreciation of Whales moving camera and expressionistic set ups...mostly in the first half. The sound is ok, but does no favors to Irene Dunne's top notes.

Altogether a very moving must see.
