Earl Cameron Dead At 102

In my ongoing survey of British films, he's offered an interesting and varied assortment of roles.

Love the last line in the article. If only it hadn't been necessary to be true.

The first interracial relationship in British cinema ?

Post by Fred M. Stevens » Sat Jul 11, 2020 5:12 pm

A life remarkable, but one can nitpick the NYT claim that “ ‘Pool of London’ (1951), a film noir about a group of sailors on shore leave” presented “the first interracial relationship in British cinema.”
For example, I seem to remember a 1930s UK film where Merle Oberon lost her head for Charles Laughton (but then, of course, Oberon was not presented on or off screen as anything but 100% white). Would Anna May Wong’s involvement with Jameson Thomas in Piccadilly - a film I’ve not seen- more authentically qualify? And then, Anna May Wong in The Flame of Love?

I agree with you, Fred, but of course, I've heard Sidney Poitier referred to as "African Americans"..... although not Omar Sharif, Basil Rathbone, or Charlize Theron.

Cameron offered some good performances. My favorite was in The Hundred Hour Hunt.

I'll always remember Earl Cameron in the last Gordon Scott outing as Tarzan, called "Tarzan the Magnificent"(1960).
