Film legend Harry “Dobe” Carey Jr. will return to his old family ranch at Tesoro Adobe Historic Park in Valencia on Saturday for the first time since the park’s dedication in 2005, said Albert Ewing, a recreation services leader for Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation.
Carey, his wife Marilyn and other members of the Carey family will be guests of honor at a country-style picnic potluck luncheon at the park starting at noon on Saturday. The event is free to the public.
“This is a wonderful time, a time where the park is well-developed with programs in place, the plants and trees are in full bloom and Mr. Carey gets to come back and see it in a way he’s never seen it before,” Ewing said.
Ewing said he anticipates hundreds of guests at the event, including many of Carey’s friends and acquaintances.
“I have gotten so many inquiries, even from some actors and actresses, people who worked with him, and old-timers who helped develop this valley and knew him,” he said.
Tesoro Adobe Historic Park, which is now under L.A. County’s ownership, is the site of the 1,000-acre ranch once owned by the Careys.
Noted western-film actor Harry Carey, credited with at least 233 movies, built the ranch in the 1920s and 1930s. Carry Jr. got into the family business after serving in the Navy and the Office of Strategic Services during World War II.
Carey Jr. has starred in movies such as “Rolling Home” (1946), “Pursued” (1947) and “The Searchers” (1956) which also starred John Wayne. He was also a star on the small screen, starring in “The Adventures of Spin & Marty” and the original “Mickey Mouse Club.”
Harry Carey Sr. was honored with a plaque on the Walk of Western Stars in Newhall in 1987. Carey Jr. was inducted in April 2005. Shortly after that, the Tesoro Adobe Park was donated to the county.
Ewing said county recreation leaders are thrilled to have Carey Jr. himself see the park programs that have developed in the last year such as summer camps for youth and an adult walk program.
“One of Santa Clarita (Valley’s) favorite sons is coming back to give us his seal of approval,” said Ewing, who is the event coordinator.
Ewing said an anticipated feature of the event is a question-and-answer session with Carey Jr. and his family.
