Los Angeles, Calif. — A free event open to the public unveils the Gary Cooper Commemorative Stamp by the U.S. Postal Service on Thursday, September 10, 2009, 10 a.m. at Autry Museum of the American West. On display will be Cooper’s Academy Award® for High Noon and movie posters, plus Gary Cooper’s daughter, Maria Cooper Janis, and Leonard Maltin, film critic and historian. Leonard Maltin will serve as Master of Ceremonies for this patriotic event featuring the presentation of colors by a team of Boy Scouts and the singing of the U.S. National Anthem. A special film tribute will precede remarks by Alan C. Kessler, Board of Governors, U.S. Postal Service; Cooper’s daughter, Maria Cooper Janis; and Sonya Oberly, Gary Cooper scholarship recipient.

Gary Cooper appeared in more than 38 Western films and over 100 movies and films. His performance as Marshal Will Kane in High Noon won him a second Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Cooper starred in his first all-talking film as the title character in the archetypal Western story The Virginian (1929). He also played Wild Bill Hickok in director Cecil B. DeMille’s The Plainsman (1936), and the easy-going cowboy mistaken for a notorious gunman in the comedy Along Came Jones (1945).

Autry’s Museum of the American West (in Griffith Park across from Los Angeles Zoo) is open Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the store is open till 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours for the museum and the museum store are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Thursdays from July 1 to August 31, hours for the museum and museum store are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The museum and museum store will continue to be closed on Mondays.

Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for students and seniors 60+, $3 for children 3–12, and free for Autry members, veterans, and children 2 and under. Admission is free on the second Tuesday of every month.

Here is an announcement of the Cooper stamp ceremony in pdf format. The president of Gene Autry Entertainment responded to an e-mail question about the museum and quite graciously sent me that link.
