2001: A Space Odyssey

Post by MGH » Tue Apr 05, 2011 1:34 pm

Could someone explain this Manny Farber quote: "The opening of Coogan’s Bluff is a parody of Kubrick’s 2001 start: space-devouring images, a jeep whipping across the desert floor, and a ravaged-faced Indian hopping around hills, setting up his arsenal to destroy the world as the jeep approaches."

Shot of desert = 2001 parody

You mean it isn't obvious?

Of course, with Eastwood in the cast, one might think first that it's a Leone sendup or homage, but not our Manny.

COOGAN was already well into production when 2001 opened, so this is highly unlikely, especially given that Siegel was not really into that sort of "quoting." Sometimes a jeep is just a jeep.
