The MPAA has testified to a congressional committee that there should be equal penalties for both illegal sharing and illegal downloading.

That's stupid. This is the same argument 25 years ago when Hollywood didn't want people with vcrs recording movies. The movie business didn't fall apart because of it. 50% of the function of a vcr was recording something on it, what else could you do with a vcr and blank video tape. And the MPAA I thought were supposed to only rate movies, not tells us how or what to watch. I agree however that if somebody is illegally profiteering off movies or music then they should be penalized. That means a person peddling bootleg videos , dvds, cds for profit or P2P sharing for monetary gain. But if a guy pays for a legitimate download and burns to his own hard drive for personal use, I don't see what the problem is or how you can stop it. As long as he doesn't sell it or profit off of it in any way. The key word is 'remuneration'.

If you think in some numbers...
The profity of a film many times it's far from the DVD price.
The package, printing of disk and shipping, and taxes take most. A percent go to the distributer too.
In countries like Brazil any importation over 50 dollars (and they incluse the shipping cost to make the calculation

) will pay 60% of tax. And the shipping to Brazil it's very expansive too.
In the end, if you import 3 DVDs, only a very tiny fraction of the money you spent will go to the owners of the film.
If it's a silent film restored by a film archive, entity, preservationist groop with fight to get cash to save films, only a few dollars will go to their pockets.
If you want to help save films, sometimes it's better to download the films, and use the money to make a donation to the archive who restored it and to the DVD producers who polished it digitally.

They should also go after destitute Grandmothers and Single Mother's on welfare since that strategy has worked so well for the RIAA imbeciles.
