I don't get it. If the rights were there to have it screen 30 years ago - why are there rights issues today? (Forgive me if I sound naive, I am).

It all depends on what rights you bought when. There are a number of 70s and 80s movies which bought rights to pop songs for theatrical and TV use, not anticipating (or not willing to pay for) home video use. So other songs have to be substituted (and in the process, change how the movie will be seen from then on).

Thanks Mike. It is a pity it can't work on a royalties basis - so that those who own the rights could share in the profits once the DVD's or other matter were sold. It seems silly that rights have to purchased up front when there is such a limited interest in a subject which then prohibits anyone doing anything about it.
