Ivan Mosjoukine's facelift

I've read that when the great actor Ivan Mosjoukine came to Hollywood under a Universal contract, the producers told him he'd have to get a face-lift and he complied. However, according to "The Carnival Child", a very fine Russian documentary on Mosjoukine, he didn't get a facelift until after he returned to Europe, his Hollywood career having consisted of only one film, 1926's "Surrender." Anyone know how the Universal story got started or if there is any truth to it?
