Hi All
Just joined the forum
I'm thinking of trying to get to this year's Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna. Can anyone give guidance on how one goes about getting full festival passes. There's nothing on the festival web-site to indicate how to get these in advance of getting to Italy although it's clear from the leaflets posted of previous years, that this is possible. Is it possible to get in advance or can I just purchase a full festival pass at the festival itself.
Many thanks
George

Re: Il Cinema Ritrovato 2012 - Attendance
Last year you could buy the festival passes online in advance. The newsletter with the information was sent in April. So probably it will be same this year. Best send an E-Mail to the festival office to get on the distribution list for the newsletter.
I'm still undecided if I will go this year. 2011 was my first visit to Bologna and it was great. But also very exhausting. It means cinema from the early morning till after midnight for a whole week.

If you are in the US, I would also look at threads about the notable US festivals including Cinefest (in March, upstate NY), Cinevent (Memorial Day weekend, Ohio), Rome Capitolfest (July I think, upstate NY), Cinecon (LA, Labor Day weekend) and Cinesation (September, Ohio). (Is Slapsticon happening? Anyone know yet?) They each have a different focus and personality which may be more or less like Il Cinema Ritrovato in some way.

Capitolfest is August 10, 11, and 12 this year. We're always the second weekend in August.

Re: Il Cinema Ritrovato 2012 - Attendance
All those festivals are wonderful, and I love to attend them all. And I can list their merits easily.
In terms of Il Cinema Ritrovato, it's Italy (need I say more?), a huge selection of beautifully restored films from around the world from the 1890s to 1970s, many of the world's best film archivists in attendance, amazing (and not that expensive) restaurants, and the huge screenings at the Piazza Maggiore every night with a giant-sized screen. (See http://vimeo.com/26159154" target="_blank) One thing is it's hot so if you like air conditioning, the Hotel Roma is the best of the Festival's suggestions.
Others will and do prefer Pordenone since it's a smaller area (the theater and the cafe across the street) to meet everybody and it's entirely about silent cinema.
Both festivals have been downsized the last few years because of the economy, but they are still incredible experiences.
