Has this 2005 David Lee Fisher film been discussed before? Sorry I'm 7 years too late, but I just picked up a copy and started watching it. My feelings kept getting mixed: "I love it, I hate it, I love it, I hate it." But I couldn't stop myself from being fascinated. I did love the mascara-lined actors though.

Never saw any of the Caligari remakes, but there was a recent BBC radio program called The Cabaret of Dr. Caligari.

It is less a remake than a playfull re-enactment, much like Van Sant's "Psycho". As such I found it pretty watchable and entertaining. Unfortunately, unlike the original, the cast is rather second rate, and having Conrad Veidt and Werner Krauss in the back of one's mind makes it a bit frustrating.

More importantly, regardless of what copy...did you understand it?

It actually took me several viewing before I understood the story completely. There is a reason for everything you see.
