She's a Sheik, 1927

One print, at least, survived until 1971, when it was shown at the Nat. Film Theater, London, according to Wiki. All current sources report present survivial status "unknown." Could it have survived all those decades of silent-film neglect only to vanish in "enlightened" times?

It might be helpful if it were known where the BFI got that print in 1971. Was it loaned from a private collector (say for instance, young Mr. Brownlow)? Did Bebe Daniels keep any copies of her own films?

Title card: "Harness my zebras — gift of the Nubian King!" (Whoops. Right year, wrong movie.)

Always wondered: how many takes (if not scratches) did it take to get that shot?

Clarence,

:o I don't know the Leopard looks like he is in Love with Bebe! He enjoys being fondled and held!

Are you sure that still is from SHE'S A SHEIK?

Thought it would be easy to pin down source of above image, unforgettable, & reproduced "everywhere"; my confidence has been proven unwarranted. However, I did stumble upon evidence of how the shoot ended:

Clarence,

:o How disappointing. I expected you to say that you would have enjoyed being fondled and held too.

The thing is I have seen stills from SHE'S A SHEIK before, and by contrast this just appears to be more from an earlier Cecil De Mille picture? You may still be right though? Who knows?

Much obliged! Wasted 10 min trying to find out what it sold for, but the auction company's idiotic registration requirements defeated me.

It sold for $81 including a 19.5% Buyer's Premium. Here's the LC in question:

A very fair price, relative to much less interesting ones I see listed on ebay; I'd gladly pay the same, if anyone's got another.

I came across an ad for She's a Sheik in an old newspaper advertisement and tried to find out where there might be a copy of the film. When I saw the Wikipedia article claim that the movie had been shown in 1971 I wrote the BFI Nationa Film institute about it. I received a reply that the movie was actually shown on November 24, 1970. However the author of the email said that nobody was at BFI when the film was shown was still at BFI and they have no record of the film in their archives and there were no records of the film in other archives the author of the email checked.

He did ask around and there was speculation that the film might have been in the collection of Philip Jenkinson. I remember making a bit more of an effort at the time to find the film based on the new information but I didn't succeed and right now I don't remember exactly what I did.

As an aside the lobby card and the other image of Bebe Daniels were awesome. Do you suppose the lobby card is in the public domain by now? I'd like to add it to the Wikipedia article. Even if it wasn't, fair use might allow the use of a reduced resolution image.

The new Library of Congress database does not show any holdings.

When I was putting together the report, this was one of the titles I tried to track down. There was one, less than perfect, 16mm print. The collector has died, and his film collection was dispersed. The film may exist, and I have a request through some collector friends to see if anyone in the U.K. knows the fate of this copy.
