Is This Noah Young *Our* Noah Young?

Post by odinthor » Thu Sep 13, 2012 1:47 pm

Does anyone know if the Noah Young who was the bereaved father in the following was the Noah Young associated with Hal Roach and Harold Lloyd? An article published the following day after the following relates the successful rescue of the horse and dog. Here are just a few excerpts from the articles.

Los Angeles Times, June 12, 1950: “Two El Monte sisters drowned yesterday—despite frantic rescue efforts by a 16-year-old youth—when the older girl’s horse floundered in Santa Anita reservoir and the younger girl failed in a rescue attempt. Neither of the sisters, Aileen, 17, and 13-year-old Alice Young, could swim, Sheriff’s deputies said. […] Buttemere said Aileen’s horse was afraid of water and suddenly panicked. The horse, Bandy, after throwing Aileen, swam on to another sand spot. […] Aileen’s dog Nickie was with Bandy and also refused to leave. […]”

The article goes on to quote “Mrs. Noah H. Young” as she talks about the deceased and their two other children (Walter, age 18, and Winifred). The article of the following day relates, among much else: “Upon hearing of the double tragedy, the girls’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Young of 640 Adelia Ave., collapsed and were treated at Temple City Emergency Hospital.”

Laura Balogh is working on a biograph of Noah Young. I'm not sure when it will be published.

The 1940 Census lists Noah H. Young, father of the above-named children; who are listed in the household; as being a contractor/carpenter in the building trade who was born in Louisiana. He is 53 years old. They were living in El Monte in 1940, and had been there in 1935 also.

I hope this helps, Rick.

OK, thanks--that settles it. "Our" Noah Young was born in Colorado in 1887 (quoth Wikipedia). In 1930's Feet First, to me he looks as if he had been ill and lost a large amount of weight. He evidently got out of show biz--at least, in front of the cameras-- after Bonnie Scotland in 1935.
