Surviving Marceline Day silents

Post by silentfilm » Wed Jul 24, 2013 9:44 pm

Obviously The Beloved Rogue (1927), Captain Salvation (1927) and The Cameraman (1928) survive, as they are available on DVD. The Langdon shorts Picking Peaches, Feet of Mud and The Hansom Cabman (all 1924) all survive and are available on DVD also.

Rookies (1927) and Detectives (1928) have been screened at Cinecon.

London After Midnight (1927) is famously lost. The Big City is lost, although a trailer with only artwork, no scenes from the film, survives.
Trent's Last Case (1929) does survive, although it is missing a reel.

Under the Black Eagle survives too, but I'm not aware of any festival screenings.

Here's a nice photo of Marceline and Karl Dane from DETECTIVES (1928):

Black Oxfords (1924) is one of the Paul Geuricki/Mack Sennett restorations that played on TCM last year. And Richard Roberts says that The White Outlaw (1925) also exists. (There was also a different White Outlaw (1929) starring Art Acord that was sold by Blackhawk.)

The FIAF database lists a few more titles not mentioned above, including Fools of Fashion (1926) held by the BFI, Freedom of the Press (1928) at the Cineteca Nazionale in Rome, The Jazz Age (1929) at the Library of Congess, That Model From Paris (1926) at the Nat'l Archives of Canada, Ottawa, and Wall Street Whiz (1925), held by Lobster Films. But, as ever, just because they're listed doesn't mean the prints are complete, or in a viewable state.

Hi all,
I am brand new here at NitrateVille, so please let me introduce myself. I became passionate about bringing back from oblivion the names and legacy of under-rated but distinguished silent movie personalities. I created a website to help achieve this goal, but even before I did this, I researched extensively the silent films of Marceline Day. I have very detailed info about all FIAF, LOC, UCLA, Warner, etc. holdings - you can see all this info if you visit silent-hall-of-fame.org and then go to the page Our Accomplishments.
You can do many other things on my website: you can contribute with movie star names that you believe deserve better recognition, you can write an original bio of your favorite star, you can chat in the forum, and you can watch a critically acclaimed movie that is not available anywhere else absolutely free. I hope to see you there soon.
Thanks a lot,
Alex

My understanding is that her MGM features THE BARRIER, THE BOY FRIEND, THE GAY DECEIVER and A CERTAIN YOUNG MAN are all lost, alas. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

yes, DETECTIVES by Chester Franklin. Why isn't this out on WarnerArchive DVD? Has it ever made a round on TCM?

Detectives doesn't have a soundtrack recorded, so it has never played on TCM. I've heard that Rookies is much, much funnier, so I hope that it gets a music score first.
