Character Name in West Point movie of 1928

Post by misteranalog » Fri Jan 03, 2014 1:23 pm

Saw West Point (1928) movie on TCM today.
I had to wonder about one of the characters' names"
"Brice Wayne" played by William Haines
wonder if an aspiring comic book artist saw that movie and tucked away the name for future reference...?

It's tempting, but the Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and first appeared in Detective Comics in May 1939. According to Bill Finger (quoting from wikipedia), ""Bruce Wayne's first name came from Robert Bruce, the Scottish patriot. Bruce, being a playboy, was a man of gentry. I searched for a name that would suggest colonialism. I tried Adams, Hancock ... then I thought of Mad Anthony Wayne." He later said his suggestions were influenced by Lee Falk's popular The Phantom, a syndicated newspaper comic-strip character with which Kane was familiar as well."

Although, William Haines did have a secrete superhero identity, Interior Design Man.

Though Kane did admit to finding some of the inspiration for the character of Batman in The Bat Whispers (1930). It's also said that the Joker was partly inspired by The Man Who Laughed (1928), though I can't find a solid source for that claim, other than the fact that the character originally looked very similar to Conrad Veidt in the film.

He told John Tibbetts that a major inspiration was Douglas Fairbanks in The Mark of Zorro, a story I've heard elsewhere too.

Character Name Origins Debunked

While J D Salinger was no stranger to Hollywood, having dated Oona and having sold a story
to Goldwyn Image , it's likely an urban legend that a Dear Ruth poster Image
-for a film inspired by the Groucho Marx family- provided him with the name of his most famous character...

According to the Batman wiki (and I thought I was a geek, the mind boggles) Kane said that Bruce Wayne's parents saw The Mark of Zorro the night they were killed.
