Any cool suggestions for displaying DVD & BD cases?

Post by Daveismyhero » Thu Mar 13, 2014 12:38 pm

Hello all,

I have absolutely no idea where the best place is to start this discussions, so I'll put it here and the mods can move it as they see fit. :)

I have a ton of DVDs and BDs, many of which have striking covers, so I would like to display some of these in our movie room, if possible. I don't want it to look like a library, where you can only see the spine of the movie, I want to showcase the artwork on the front cover.

So if anyone has any cool suggestions or links, please share! As always, thank you in advance for taking the time to reply.

How about getting one of those digital picture frames and putting the covers on a slide show setting at the center of the display? That way, you could store the dvds efficiently, enjoy the cover art and get some inspiration for what you wish to watch tonight?

Here's an Amazon.com link for the digital picture frames.

They sell them in stores, too.

I gotta say, I hadn't thought outside of the box and considered the digital picture frame. That is an intriguing idea!

David, I am trying to think of a way to display some of the DVD & BD cases themselves, if we can come up something cool enough that my wife approves of. :)

Well, you buy some reproduction movie posters and put them on the wall, especially
if it is a room dedicated to it. Or possibly scan some favorite DVD fronts and print them
out at a larger size... I like the sound of that photo frame idea though, more versatile.

You're right that many cases have very appealing artwork. Here's one suggestion where you use the existing cases, although I don't know how much room you have.

If you wanted to plaster them all over an entire wall, you could simply attach some double-sided tape to the back of the cases and arrange them as you wish. I have a collection (18) of Sports Car Advertizing art that I created a single frame to hold them all (each stacked behind in the frame), allowing me to change the image from time to time.

You could make a collage of DVD cases in a single large frame. If you didn't show them all at once, you could simply replace the ones on display as I did with the car art so it would always look fresh & different. Since all cases will be of the same dimension, they'd be easy to exchange.

You could store the DVD elsewhere, or leave them in the individual cases.

Thanks again for the suggestions, folks! Keep 'em coming, should inspiration strike! I am currently in negotiations with my wife about what will be allowed.

Good luck with the wife...mine only allows me to decorate the garage walls. I have a large coffee table book of movie posters where I store other related material I've collected. If you're looking for other film ideas, "Hobby Lobby" has some interesting wall art with movie themes. Might even be able to check them out on line?

If you built the large collage frame yourself, holes could be cut in a plywood board to fit the cases and used as the mounting method. The board could be then covered with images of movie palaces or other similar artwork. Finish it with a frame molding.

Another idea would be to install something resembling chair rail molding at the height you want and then simple set the cases on the molding. You can find molding that would meet your requirement without too much effort.
