Georges Melies vs Segundo de Chomon

Melies and de Chomon are two masters of early cinematic magic. My question is, what was the personal relationship between them? Were they competitive, or associates in some way? I can see no difference in their styles. According to the liner notes from "Georges Melies Encore" DVD, there were several films by Segundo de Chomon, previously attributed to Georges Melies."

I compared Melies "Trip To The Moon" to de Chomon's "Excursion To The Moon" and actually preferred de Chomon's version.

Any comments, comparison's, contrasts between the two filmmakers? Were they friends of competitors?
