What If??!! The 1928 (?) War of the Worlds!

Post by Tastypotpie » Wed Jul 02, 2014 2:28 pm

I've always wondered what the announced by Paramount, but never made, late 20's version of The War of the Worlds would of been like.
Can you imagine Clara Bow & William Powell running away from scenes of destruction from stop motion animated tripod monsters? :D
Would there have been technicolor inserts of the aliens?
Could it have been a part talkie??!!
(Suspected dialogue) "Oh Charles! You MUST stop those NASTY ole tripods or else Father will never let us marry!"

Does anybody have any background on this? Was there a cast list made? Script? Any preproduction artwork survive?

Here's a HUGE ad for it (and The Wedding March) from the Vitaphone Varieties webpage. http://bp2.blogger.com/_bdtuKKCTCf4/Rmy ... orlds2.jpg" target="_blank

Another ad for it is here on this Raymond Griffith thread. http://nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=432" target="_blank

Btw, I picked 1928 as a suspected release date.

I was going to suggest Vitaphone would most likely use the radio broadcasts and sound effects with music instead of synchronized sound, but then I realized this was ten years before the infamous Radio Broadcast in 1938.

It's too bad we never got a chance to see Lon Chaney playing an alien.

Chaney was under contract to MGM.

There is no way that MGM would have loaned Chaney to Paramount.
