While listening to all the songs of devotion written right after Rudolph Valentino's death, I was struck by the realization that they were all sung by MEN. At least the ones that are included in the "Special Features" of the 2-DVD Valentino set from Flicker Alley. Songs like "There's A New Star In Heaven To-Night", "The Great Director Has Called You", and some others featured MALE singers. The reason this got my attention is because all the anti-Rudy publicity while he was alive. I've seen it written many times that the male audience hated him. The "Pink Powder Puff" and all that. (The Gay male impression is not to be found. Although that would be an interesting discussion in itself).

Any thoughts on this? Was male opposition to him only publicity, and not really true of the male audience? Or did men have a change of heart when he died, and joined in with all the eulogizing?

I remember as a child we had a 78 of a man singing "I'm Just Wild About Harry". I didn't find it odd at the time being so young, but later on it did seem so - in our day and age. I think that at the time these recordings were made the world was a lot more innocent and not so consciously sexual. The lyrics and the music would have been judged the important factor and the gender of the person putting them over would not have been considered important or odd.
