Quicksand scenes in silent movies

Post by sepiatone » Fri Aug 26, 2016 10:11 am

Are there many or any? I'm thinking Mary Pickford's "Sparrows" may contain such a scene, I haven't seen the film in so long I'll have to view it here on the web. But are there others?

This question came up as there is an interesting article on Quicksand scenes in movies on the Wikipedia. I didn't know it was such a cult thing. Youtube contains clips of scenes from many a movie but they are usually films dating from the 1940s onward with the 60s being the heyday of dying-in-Quicksand scenes. What about the silent era?

I seem to remember a film where someone rolls out of a Murphy bed and into a pit of quicksand, but darned if I can remember the title.

I had to go through all my digital clippings as well as printed collection to confirm this one - there is a quicksand scene in "Trail of the Horse Thieves" (1929) where little Frankie Darro has to pull his hero Tom Tyler out of the quicksand. It is a lost film unfortunately.

In Sparrows 1926,Mark Hamilton plays the character of the Hog Buyer. The muddy movie set was more of a bog than quicksand but you will see that the Hog Buyer loses a barrel off of his wagon which sinks and when trying to retrieve it gets stuck himself and has to be pulled out by Mr. Grimes (Gustav Von Seffertitz). Also, there is a seen in the film where Ambrose (Spec O' Donnell) has to be rescused by Pickford and Mr. Grimes also falls in, but I will not give away all of the details if you haven't seen the film.
