The University of Wisconsin Cinematheque has published my new essay, "A World Turned Over: Wellman’s BEGGARS OF LIFE" ahead of a screening of the 1928 Louise Brooks film on December 1, 2017.

Very nice. I actually read your essay yesterday while looking at the upcoming screenings.

I've been watching this film for nearly twenty years, back when the image was scratchy and many of the titles were dark & unreadable. I've followed the progress of the film through earlier performances in cinemas, purchasing the latest effort by Jack Hardy (at Grapevine) and now, it's out on Blu Ray. With so many previous viewings, I can close my eyes and replay the story in my mind.

I hope there's a good turnout on December 1st. Perhaps you can provide a follow up after it's screened.
