TCM's "Leading Couples" book

Post by Harold Aherne » Mon Jan 19, 2009 4:51 pm

TCM's recent series of books focusing on leading men, women, and now couples have never exactly been paradigms of deep research or interesting new facts, but the couples book hits quite a remarkable low in the Janet Gaynor-Charles Farrell section. It's good that they're included at all, of course, but near the end of their chapter we are told "There are no surviving prints or negatives of Street Angel (1928), even though it was one of Fox's most popular late silents".

Seriously, I hope these books don't attain a wider influence than the works of Brownlow, Slide, Koszarski, and so many others.

Wow, no surviving negatives or prints, eh? Perhaps the new DVD was mastered from the sole surviving, recently rediscovered VHS tape.
