Not for the Film purest, Someone has taken the time to rework Lang's Metropolis. A few years ago, you could choose either a colorized or dubbed version in Academy size. This is not that. It's more.
The picture has been stretched to fit the 16 X 9 screen and the unrestored clips have been slightly enlarged so now, all the images, restored or not, appear in the same size aspect and fill the flatscreen. Everything has been colourized, so those un-restored clips are not quite so annoying when seeing them in color or in the same size as the rest of the film.
There's dialogue, sound effects (even a 'public address' system in the 'machine room), and the wonderful 'Metropolis' score can also be heard in the background, just as music is heard in modern films.
There are a few deletions reducing the run time to just over two hours, but a lot of the shorter time is because all the titles have been removed. I did notice where running speed was adjusted slightly where Fredersen first sees the 'machine man' (in the original, it takes forever to notice any movement). The subtle sound effects of everything really brought the film to life.
Naturally, those involved in making this, also slightly deviated the dubbed story from how I understood it, but it certainly was a joy to watch last night. All this effort and it's free to watch on YouTube.

Simply awful. I could barely tolerate the crassness during the fifteen minutes I watched. The horizontally stretched figures seem to me an aesthetic crime. Abuse of a masterwork, if you ask me. The restored original version is full of life and thrilling and needs no tinkering from those with short attention spans.

Thank you telling me the picture was 'stretched' and not 'enlarged' as I had wrote. When I first saw the '10 hour clock' (2 minutes in), I thought it was Zoomed, but it's clearly been stretched where you see the worker moving the hands at his workstation (27.50). I will correct my post.Trueblood wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2019 10:41 amSimply awful. I could barely tolerate the crassness during the fifteen minutes I watched. Like you, I'm a fan of original films, but sometimes enjoy the efforts of others to bring new interest to film.
