Thanks, Ed. A lovely piece. I passed it on to several movie lover friends of mine in hopes of expanding their interests to silents. As to wich2's comments, let's not be so judgmental. I don't think Ms.Stewart is trite or particularly professorial--not that a bit of academic slant is at all a bad thing.

I welcome Prof. Stewart's contributions and her position as host. I taught at a film school in Chicago that completely eliminated History of Cinema as a class for a number of years, so it's gratifying to see the importance of silent films is still emphasized at some institutions and it can be passed along to a mainstream audience.

Just being honest, David. Professorial is fine in some situations... but Venue matters.

There is a rare gift, of being informational and informal at the same time in such a TV gig. Osborne and Dorian had it; even Mankiewicz does, in his own way.

Here, Stewart seemed not to be conversing with us the listeners, so much as reeling off tropes and bromides.

I just want to point out we tend to judge television personalities after they have obtained some level of popularity. Few remember their earlier days when they were less polished and comfortable on TV. Robert Osborne was an exception since he was already an actor with years of experience in front of a camera. I have real faith in Jacqueline Stewart that she will be a great asset to TCM for years to come.

Look at how beautifully restored all those clips are. They did a great job showing silents in their best light.

I also love and wholeheartedly agree with the comments about seeing these films being like interacting with the past, like traveling back in time. For me, I think that may be the most appealing thing about vintage movies.
