MOVIE MEMORIES (1934)

Here is a time capsule, MOVIE MEMORIES (#2), from 1934, which pays tribute to various stars who have passed away, each of them recently at the time this film was made. Several of them are actors for whom we have no known voice recordings now.

I throw this out here in case anybody knows where some of these clips come from. This is a Vitaphone short so I'm guessing the footage of Willard Louis comes from one of his many lost Warner Brothers films, while Dustin Farnum apparently was filmed behind the scenes on THE FLAMING FRONTIER. Note the clip of Lon Chaney is from a famous lost scene from THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Roscoe Arbuckle, of course, comes from HEY POP.

How come the HUNCHBACK scene is lost?

As I recall it was deleted when the film was edited down for general release from its original length.

Still, those few seconds are movie gold — like watching unseen footage from Phantom of the Opera.

Mind you, it's kind of a shame they couldn't use footage of Chaney creeping around in LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT...

In case anyone's curious, that theme that plays through much of the short is "Just A Memory", by DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson.
