Help With Three Stills

Post by Gumlegs » Tue Mar 31, 2009 7:27 pm

I have three items here which need identification. The first two are from a Charley Chase film mocking a Broadway show called, "The Jest." Can anyone identify the film?

The third is a still from a John Barrymore silent. The ID it came with said "Don Juan," but it doesn't match any scene in the film. I think that's Slim Summerville looking at the gentleman sitting at the desk, and Summerville isn't in "Don Juan." He is, however, in "The Beloved Rogue." Can anyone help with this one?

Thanks.

You're probably right about the 3rd still being from "The Beloved Rogue". I remember Conrad Veidt being the villain of the piece and the guy on the far right looks like good ole Con, doens't he?

The film might be BELOVED ROGUE (it's been 20 years since I've seen it), but that's not Conrad Veidt in the photo.

I don't believe that it is The Beloved Rogue. The look is similar but I don't recognize any of the actors from the film. Plus, the torture scene was much more elaborate and very differently costumed.

Could there be another version of Don Juan? Or could it be an incidental scene during the Barrymore version?

I just watched "Don Juan" on TCM. There is no scene anything at all like the still above. Summerville isn't in "Don Juan," and Dick Sutherland (I think that's Sutherland with leaning on the leg crusher), has only a bit part as "a gentleman of Rome."

Note Barrymore's shoes: they have a very high vamp (the top of the shoe that goes up the instep), that curves out away from the let. Barrymore doesn't wear shoes like that in "Don Juan."

Perhaps I've made a bad assumption -- is that really Barrymore?
