An open letter to anyone who cares

Post by Bob Birchard » Sat May 09, 2009 1:58 pm

Since the venues where Richard Roberts is welcome are dwindling down to a prceious few, I thought I'd let everyone know that I spent an hour on the phone yesterday with my arch nemesis, Richard Roberts, and that we have agreed to bury the hatchet--in each other's heads.

Richard has alerted me that he will be passing through Los Angeles in the near future, and in the event of such a sojourn, I have to warn the nitrateville community that Richard and I, and our seconds (and thirds), will likely meet for dinner, as we usually do when he is in town.

It is entirely possible that we might break out into a fight--over the check. But, he who fights and runs away may live to fight another day--so I will let Richard win that battle.

But if it looks like fisticuffs might ensue, I pledge to alert all of you in advance. I wouldn't want to see innocent heads roll. There are too few of us as it is.

When?
I'm going to be in San Diego 23-26 July I wouldn't mind meeting any of you.
I however will refrain from fisticuffs as I am rather fragile.

I wish you two would have the common decency to save your confrontation for the Cinecon business meeting, so the rest of us can enjoy it.

Ooo! And bring props!

So does this mean that Richard is doing a "Ham and Bud" marathon at the next Cinecon?

Something of this sort actually did happen a few years back. David Totheroh and I were mixing it up on line and there were those who assumed we were mortal enemies, so we staged a mock fight at Cinecon and pictures were taken.

Somehow we both managed to survive, and both of us were able to exclaim: "He never touched me."

Somehow the thought of Bob and Me doing this at Cinecon brings to mind Orson Welles and John Houseman dancing together on the Merv Griffin show. not the talent levels mind you, just the sight of two old fat guys dancing.

I once asked John Houseman if, when Welles threw a chafing dish at him at Chasen's, he thought Welles had "intent to kill."

He barked a laugh and said "Orson and I were always throwing things at each other-- potted plants, typewriters, desks."

By the way, this is kind of interesting, although why Welles is 40 in 1937, I'm not sure. Still, the guy who plays him is pretty dead-on.
