Fig Leaves (1926)

Post by Henry Nicolella » Wed Oct 14, 2009 10:02 am

Anyone know if the Technicolor sequences of this film survive? Supposedly there were two: the Garden of Eden prologue and then later the fashion show.

Sorry, guys, O'Brien doesn't wear fig leaves. He wears an off-the-shoulder caveman outfit in the film's early Garden of Eden scenes, and overalls thereafter.

I don't think the Technicolor scenes exist anymore. In the B&W print I've seen, the fashion show sequence has the typically muddy look of footage that had been shot in Tech and printed in B&W, but the Garden of Eden sequence looks like it had always been in B&W. There may be footage missing from it, though, who knows?

I don't mean to make the film sound like one colossal disappointment. It's actually a lot of fun and well worth seeing!

I remember the Bam-Bam loincloth, but thought we got to see him naked above the waist at least once in the Eden sequence. Yes, I'll second that the film is fun (all the more reason for a DoN convention in Atlanta if EB won't screen this at Cinecon.)

But if any of Eden exists in color I would *so* love to see this on a big screen.

Can you be more specific about cut and drape?

Actually, O'Brien is bare chested in bed at the beginning of the prologue. So is Olive Borden but-alas!-she's covered with a blanket.
All the pr I've seen on the film claims the prologue is in technicolor

Ah yes, the L-shaped blanket. I've not yet located one in real life, but they are amazingly prevalent in movies.

Original prints were the double-cement process and would be woefully faded. The color footage was 969 feet long.

Well I watched this one Sunday and didn't like it at all. While George O'Brien, Olive Borden, and Phyllis Haver are all mighty attractive the story didn't have much to say and the blurry fashion show seemed interminable. The copy I have used a lot of deep tints that were very nice but the music was dreary and not very appropriate (in my opinion).
