Have just searched for a bit in Google books and have found quite a few on production that have passages about picture acting. A great resource. Thanks again.

Pudovkin's Film Acting didn't appear until 1933, but his 1929 book Film Technique looks at acting from the point of view of a director ("The Director and the Actor," "The Actor in the Frame," "Types Instead of Actors").

Mae Marsh's autobiography, Screen Acting, has a great deal of insight into the matter of silent movie acting. Published New York : F. A. Stokes Co., c1921. The book is available in a variety of sources today, including Googlebooks.
