Cleo, Antony, and Spartacus

Post by Danny » Tue Mar 16, 2010 3:02 pm

I just noticed two DVDs I hadn't seen before. "Cleopatra & Antony", and "Spartacus". Both Italian and from 1913 or 16, I believe. They are released by a company I wasn't familiar with.

Has anybody seen these who can provide some feedback?

I posted these comments on Spartacus on ams a few years back:

This information i have on this film (from Moving Picture World, June 6, 1914 p. 1338) is that it was produced by Pasquali Productions (presumably Ernesto Maria Pasquali)?, distributed by George Kleine, and stars Mario Ausonia, Christina Ruspoli, Enrico Bacci, Maria Gandini, Luigi Mele, and Verdi Giovanni. I don't believe i found any information on these actors. The Grapevine version has no credits. I thought it enjoyable, though it concentrates on a love story rather than the slave revolt, which seems odd. I imagine the American print was edited down, so who knows what's in the print that's will be in Sydney--but at 54 minutes it's probably the same one. What i remember about the film is that whenever the leading lady would come in, the hero (nearer the camera usually) would cross his arms, sigh, and roll his eyes. After a while this became quite amusing.
