I just finished watching all of "Hollywood" and I had thought I knew alot about the silents, until I watched this documentary. It is utterly amazing and wish everyone had the opportunity to see it. It is a work of art and just based on this, he deserves his Oscar.

No doubt! Also be sure to watch his followup, "Cinema Europe: The Other Hollywood".

Hope I will one day see it. I've tried purchasing the LD on eBay but some people want over $500 for it.

Keep watching. Every once in a while one will slip through at a reasonable price.

Make sure you also have a copy of Brownlow's book `The Parade's Gone By' to accompany it. Seriously, every silent film fan should own a copy.

You really can't go wrong with any Kevin Brownlow material.

When I read his "The War, the West and the Wilderness" and "Behind the Mask of Innocence", I viewed every available film to which he devotes a chapter-length essay. This was a lot of fun and highly rewarding, and I recommend this approach if you choose to read those titles (which you should). Just be sure to watch each movie BEFORE reading the corresponding essay!

Of course, you can't go wrong with the companion book, Hollywood: The Pioneers. It's the next best thing to seeing the series, IMHO.

My only quibble with the Hollywood series was that the narrator mispronounced Marion Davies' last name as Davis. When I mentioned this to Kevin Brownlow, he told me the British pronunciation of Davies is Davis!

It's a superb piece of work right down to the theme music and opening graphics.

And of course, you also need the soundtrack LP.

They seemed to have no trouble with John Profoumo's mistress.

We have been over the pronunciations before in this forum site and yes, they seem to pronounce those words as in Hollywood as they do for John Howard Davies who was the 1948 Oliver Twist. Funnily, in Australia we do not do that and we are derived from that land for many of us. Yes & Mandy Rice was also Dav-ies to us. The wonders of the English language, I guess.

:? I love Thames HOLLYWOOD, however the Chapter on Stuntmen and what was claimed about Harold Lloyd is very mis-leading. Fortunately, this was all cleared up in THE THIRD GENIUS. Harvey Perry never doubled Harold in Safety Last. Bill Strothers did double Harold during the wide-shots (and only on the wide-shots) on the real buildings, but the rest of the time it was really Harold. Perry did double Lloyd in the wide shots of FEET FIRST, but not SAFETY LAST.
