Blood And Sand (1922)

Post by Danny » Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:09 am

The book The Paramount Story, says about Blood And Sand:

"The June Mathis script originally ended with his death in the bullring; director Fred Niblo directed a more popular finish in which he recovered."

Is that obviously a mistake? I just watched it again and Gallardo does indeed die. Was there two different endings? Sometimes you just can't believe what you read, even from some reliable sources.

I'm sure that's a glaring error. As I recall from seeing the original scenario, it's got the dark ending with Gallrdo dying (as he did in the book).

I agree. While I have not seen alternate scripts, the released version of the movie and the original book do match in how they portray the ending.

The story would be pointless if Gallardo didn't die at the end. His death as Julio in THE FOUR HORSEMEN gave his role a memorable poignancy, a lesson that I suspect was not lost in filming BLOOD OF THE ARENA - Ibanez's original Spanish title.

P.S. Talk about shop talk, I just noticed that none of the above posts including mine identify who "he" is.
