A couple of years ago for the sake of space and in the (now) painfully naïve belief that they would be prime candidates for early digital transfer I trashed my tape collection containing numerous pretty prominent films as below. This is not a wish list in the senser of 'please TCM show Garden of Allah' but a set of films which have in the past been commercially worthwhile to release ( a number in a series called Critics Choice if I remember correctly) or at least shown on TCM or elsewhere in a tidied up form. Does anyone have any info on possible or actual releases of any of these or indeed any other prominent films which so far have had only the VHS treatment
Greed
The Crowd
The Merry Widow
A Woman of Affairs
The Cossacks
The Wind
The Single Standard
Brown of Harvard
Follow Thru
Mare Nostrum
Napoleon
The Big Parade
Wings
Lilac Time
Three Bad Men
Slide Kelly Slide
What Price Glory?
A Girl in Every Port
Sunnyside Up
On a general note is the upgrade from VHS (or absence of it) simply a commercial decisions or can other legal or procedural issues which can complicate the process?
DVD Transfers please

You can still find used and sometimes "new" tapes (and laser discs) on ebay or amazon. I bought a used copy of The Wind that still looks pretty good. The TCM version of Greed is available on iTunes for 9.99. You can't watch it on your tv though although I believe there are workarounds for that. I think you can get a copy of The Big Parade via "Media Asia" although you may have to hunt for it.
The Single Standard - Warner Archive (DVD-R) Try Amazon UK Marketplace (new)
Three Bad Men - Ford at Fox: big set, silents box or singly with Hangman's House
A Girl in Every Port - Grapevine (DVD-R) Not official release.
I believe Napoleon is or was available on an Australian DVD but I didn't bother with it myself as it's the shorter edit without the Carl Davis score. A commercial release of Kevin Brownlow's restoration is supposed to be coming, but who knows when? The same applies to Greed, The Crowd, The Wind and other MGM silents which Warner claimed some years ago they were working on with Photoplay Productions (who revived them in recent times). Wings is strongly rumoured to be a future Criterion release.

Many of the aforementioned films were also available on Laser Disc (i.e, Greed, The Crowd, A Woman of Affairs, The Wind, Napoleon, The Big Parade, Wings). Used players and discs regularly turn up on Ebay at reasonable prices and the video is better than VHS tape. It's another option you may want to consider.
