Any subscribers to the Criterion Channel streaming service should check back in their email for a $10.00 criterion.com gift certificate (my email came on October 13th). I ordered a title from the Flash sale today and my certificate applied on top of the 50% off just fine.

If my work didn't just give me a $50 Barnes and Noble GC I'd be all over this. War of the Worlds and The Cameraman were both OOS last time they had a Criterion sale.

It's impossible to get in to either the Criterion or the Unobstructed View websites. I've been trying for nearly three hours. Hey, you NitrateVillains, get out of there and let some other folks snap up the bargains too! :x

I did my part by loading my cart ahead of the sale - but they dumped it out, so I had to re-select things again.
I'm all done now, I think.

I had no trouble placing an order. I was even able to use the $10 credit from the Criterion Channel, which is especially interesting to me as I froze my subscription to the channel a couple of months ago...

I tried using my loyal customer $50 reward gift, and the amount of the order reflected the reduction. But after I placed the order the confirmation showed no reduction, and when I checked my account, my reward gift wasn't there as if it were applied. I'm a little bummed to say the least.

And drat! I was busy yesterday and didn't place my order, and now The Gunfighter is not available in BluRay. It is still available on DVD though.

I got up dull and rainy but early this morning to get into the onlineup (how ya like that neologism?) for Unobstructed View. Their store of Criterion releases is not the full store; they didn't carry a couple of the titles I was looking for, and they were already sold out of some others (even the brand new Pierrot le Fou release). I ended up ordering only one film from them The Spy Who Came In From the Cold.

Then I went to Criterion and bought three films for a good price ... at least, it was good in USA dollars. Add in the minimum $23 Canadian delivery charge, do the currency conversion, and it comes out to $105 CDN ... and that's before adding the taxes and duties, which can't be ascertained in advance. Quite a rip-off for a 50% off sale, but it's what we have to put up with to support our niche.

I sent them an email and they credited my card. They were very nice about it. I suppose there must have been a glitch because of the heavy traffic on their sight. I'm happy.

Sounds like Criterion's Canadian distributor Unobstructed View is pressuring Criterion to enforce their territory agreements.

I don't know, but it seems kind of unlikely to me, because UV is unable to cope with the volume of orders it already receives. It takes weeks for them to get copies and send them out. They don't seem to have much stock on hand. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't a business being run out of their garage.

Speak of the devil ... I just received an email notice from UV that they are matching B&N's current Criterion sale, albeit at 40% discount due to currency exchange rates, and that we'll have to expect a few weeks' delivery time as they expect orders to "crash our feeble system" (their words).

Sale does not include pre-orders.

At least they're honest, and for that, they'll continue to get my business.

Tau ban no hoi aka Boat People (1982): George Lam is a Japanese photojournalist whose assignment is in Viet Nam, shooting the people and events.... when the local authorities don't confiscate his film. As he goes on, he discovers the desperate poverty of the population; it's not about the Boat People, but more about the desperation that forces the people to, in the words of the Chinese title, "Flee towards the angry sea."

Shot just after the war between China and Viet Nam, that goes a long way towards why the authorities permitted Anna Hui and her Hong Kong crew to shoot on Hainan. It's a telling story, not the least because the director lets you know this is a pure point-of-view story; every shot is perfectly composed, often beautiful in its horror. Even after Lam abandons his camera, the beautiful images continue; he's trapped with his photographer's eye, seeing things as they really are, yet unable to see anything but the beauty of misery.

Hamiltonbook has a number of Olive Films blu-rays and/or dvds on sale, many under $6 including Barbara Stanwyck's THE OTHER LOVE (is the blu-ray cover really that rather generic text only sleeve??), Dorothy Lamour's LULU BELLE, MY SON JOHN with Robert Walker and Helen Hayes, CHEERS FOR MISS BISHOP with Martha Scott, GOD'S LITTLE ACRE with Robert Ryan and Tina Louise and several others including a number of 30s-40s obscurities. https://www.hamiltonbook.com/products/s ... er_search=

Superb movie; saw it in a revival house back in the day.

But isn't this in the wrong forum?

You missed, by one day (Feb. 19th), National Battery Day (at least up here in Canada). What did you do to celebrate that significant event, folks?

Uh, keep your answers out of the bedroom, please.

For Canadians, Unobstructed View has a 45% flash sale. But there's a queue, and it's a long one. I'm #2,579 with an estimated waiting time of two hours.

I'm in Canada, but I have two $10-off coupons for being a Criterion Channel subscriber, which pretty much takes care of the shipping, so I figured I'd go with the US site. Hope DHL doesn't gouge me for a whole bunch of customs at the other end, but I'm bracing myself for it.
