Mario Soffici's 1951 classic is my personal favorite version of all of the Jekyll-Hyde films. Although it takes place in a contemporary Buenos Aires, the film is extremely faithful to the Robert Louis Stevenson's story.

You're right, this movie not only is one of the best adaptations of the story, but also the Hyde character (played, like Dr. Jekyll, by the director) has one of the most original makeup ever seen on screen. The transformation scene in the subway is simply stunning.
Do you know if a better print has finally surfaced? mine came from Argentinian TV and, as for so many other old movies, was rather poor, over-constrasted and with some deficient sound at the beginning. It's a shame, as a lot of old Argentinian movies are simply remarkable works of art.
It was released in Italy (and probably other countries) but I wonder if a good print can be located in Europe...
