All I noted was a couple of room-mates goofing-off...nothing more provocative than that. Maybe my imagination is defective.

Your gaze is a bit gay-isized.

Laurel and Hardy slept in the same bed in
Angora Love. Would they be considered gay
lovers today (as well as as members of PETA)?

Why specifically in "Angora Love"? Stan and Babe slept in the same bed in almost all their movies (if there were a bed scene of course) and I never considered it as having a "gay" implication of any kind, although being gay myself.

Has anybody noted Mischa Auer hyperactivally rhapsodiszing over Jon Hall in LADY IN THE DARK?

Top Brit TV comics from the 60s and 70s Morecambe and Wise were regularly shown in a double bed. Signifies nothing. They were happily married men. And as Morecambe, or more likely his latter-day reincarnation Vic Reeves, might have said as he put his arm around Wise "but not necessarily to each other".

If they'd been allowed to film LADY IN THE DARK as originally produced on Broadway, it would have been even more blatant.

My favorite subliminally gay character is still Gig Young in TEACHER'S PET (1958). In the film, Doris Day is enamored of the indifferent Mr. Young, much to the dismay of Clark Gable, who contrives to get Gig drunk. After a monstrous hangover, Gig spends the rest of the picture trying to help Clark and Doris get together--with apparently no romantic interest of his own. The code word for this sort of character used to be "confirmed bachelor" (e.g. Christopher Isherwood in the movie version of I AM A CAMERA).

Oh, I don't know...I always thought of Lee Dixon as Warner's answer to Buddy Ebsen, only a LOT less annoying...
