Busby Berkely and Bobby Connolly
Busby Berkely and Bobby Connolly
Why do some of the musical numbers directed by Bobby Connoly in the early 3-Strip Vitaphone shorts (Like WHAT, NO MEN?) look so much like Berkely might have had a hand in them? Was it just Connolly picking some things up from him?
Re: Busby Berkely and Bobby Connolly
I'm no expert on BB and BC but I believe they both worked for Ziegfeld in the 20s. BC did the dance routines for "Liza" where Jolson stood up from the audience to accompany Ruby Keeler's dancing onstage. BB is uncredited on THE SINGING KID but production stills and home movies clearly show him directing the "Save Me Sister" and "You're the Cure For What Ails Me" numbers. BC alone received screen credit. So I'm assuming they got along and helped each other out.
That's Bobby Connolly on the right with you-know-who on the "She's A Latin From Manhattan" set for GO INTO YOUR DANCE (1935):

Connolly's routines for Moonlight & Pretzels are impressive...considering, especially, the shoe-string budget of this picture, relative to the resources available to Berkeley.
