Tippi Hedren recently said Alfred Hitchcock came on to her and she rejected him and he ruined her career , does anybody know if this is true?

It's true that HBO is making a movie based on that premise.

It's not that big a story that merits a TV-movie, boy HBO must be dying for any new scripts.

If you watch the trailer, they've made it all very ominous.

If I recall, the first version of the story in Donald Spoto's The Art of Alfred Hitchcock (1976) was almost kind of comic-pathetic, like he made a pass and she laughed it off. It has gotten more gothic over time. Admittedly, he was still alive then. Take it as you will.



There is also a making-of-Psycho movie coming, with Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock. There's a quite startling picture of his makeup, which looks nothing like either Hopkins or Hitchcock, here. Frankly, I'm waiting for Jim Broadbent to play him; he seems to get the whimsy best.

I'm reminded of the story about Hedren looking at Sean Connery and saying to Hitchcock "I'm supposed to not be attracted to him? He's gorgeous!" and Hitch saying "It's called acting."

For a snider comment, how about this: in a choice between lack of acting ability and sexual harassment, I'd say that for Hedren it's the former. Hitch gave her two plum roles. Somehow she was acted off the screen by a bunch of pigeons.

It's OK. Like Jennifer Jones, the work Tippi is doing now is infinitely more important than her film career. She's one of those people about whom you cannot write "and then she left movies and 40 years later she died."

I know, I've met her several times, and she still looks great in a non-surgical way, one of the few vegetarians I've met who actually looks healthy. Also seems like a reasonably nice and normal person for a Hollywood type. Then again, she sired Melanie Griffith, so who knows what we're missing beyond the public view.

Hopkins didn't look like Nixon, either, but was startlingly entertaining in Oliver Stone's movie. Frank Langella made a darn good Nixon, too. There should be a Nixon movie for every veteran actor worth his salt.

As for Tippi, I defy anybody to star in Marnie and come out looking good. Well, to be fair, I remember a rather well-done turn by a convincingly solid safe, but that role was a lock.

Hopkins had some good moments but I thought the net effect of a Welshman trying to do Nixon's flat California accent was pretty close to Jubilation T. Cornpone.

Langella is nothing like the real Nixon, but he had nothing but good moments. It's not that great a play, but it's a fantastic part for an actor as commanding as he is.

Funny, I thought Sienna Miller looked way smaller than Hedren, but I guess she actually isn't.

How tall is Miller? Tippi really is petite, not just short but petite. I'm 5'5" and I tower over her.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

That movie is chock-full of fun. Everyone fighting for center stage like a bag of starving cats going for a can of Fancy Feast.

Which brings us back to Tippi Hedren, sort of. She has more guts than I ever will, consorting with those wild beasts.

I keep reading of Hitchcock aficionados re-evaluating MARNIE this past decade and many are campaigning for it to be called his last masterpiece, despite Hedren's limitations.

Here, Hopkins looks more like Robert Morley than Hitch.

If ever there was an actor born to play Hitchcock, it's Timothy Spall.



Wouldn't take a whole lot of makeup for that transition. Plus, he's a fine actor to boot.

Oh yeah, I forgot about him but I think he was attached to one of these projects at one time. Yes, absolutely.

Plus he's a Londoner. From Battersea, about eight miles from Hitch's stomping ground; he also has a gift for accents which means that, because his breakthrough TV role was as a Birmingham builder, even people here think he's actually a Brummie....I think he would have been a great choice.

I did a bit of Googling, and it turns out he was pegged to play Hitchcock for The Girl, but the part is now played by Toby Jones for some reason. Jones was fine as Truman Capote in the film that had the great misfortune to come out immediately following the Capote film starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. Physically, Jones had the better resemblance, but Hoffman is a better actor, working with a much better script and director.

Apparently Ms. Hedren believes her performance in MARNIE was of Academy Award calibre but that ole "mean" Hitchcock somehow prevented her from getting nominated

There's a trailer up for the making of Psycho movie.

Hopkins sounds not a bit like Hitchcock (though once or twice he sounds like Michael Caine), but unlike in the HBO movie, he gets the puckish humor.

Which means, unlike the HBO movie, this looks like a lot of fun...

He sounds enough like Hitchcock for the purposes of the movie, especially without a direct comparison. I think to be more accurate he sounds like a good simulation of most people's ideal of what Hitchcock talked like in public. (Don't try to say that all in one breath)

Lacks the glottal resonance though.

I hate to say this but that (1930- ) seems to me like one of those placeholders looking to be filled.

For awhile I thought that was Billy Crystal doing Hopkins doing Hitchcock.

If one believes Spoto's Spellbound By Beauty, Hitch was terrible to Hedren, akin to what I'd call aggravated sexual harassment, for lack of a better term.

He looks more like Sidney Howard, who plays the drunk in "Transatlantic Merry-Go-Round" ;-}
