Simple math using actors

Post by Lokke Heiss » Thu Oct 25, 2012 11:34 pm

Credit for this idea goes to Brent Walker, who was using Facebook, Inc. Ltd. GmbH TM.

Here's an example of how the game goes: Lee Marvin + Steve McQueen = James Coburn

RS thinks more like Lee Marvin + Steve McQueen = 5-10 years in lockup!

CS suggests George Bancroft + Victor McLaglen = Wallace Beery

EW suggests Edwin Maxwell + Donald MacBride = Edward Arnold

I suggest Steve McQueen + motorcycle = 'The cooler.'

BW suggests Charlie Chaplin - Billy West = Harry Mann

I suggest Buster Keaton - Roscoe Arbuckle = Al St. John

Any more simple math suggestions?

My grasp of this game is a little shaky but how about this:

George Arliss + Edward G. Robinson = Paul Muni

Edward G. Robinson - James Cagney = Humphrey Bogart

Let's try slightly more complex mathematics:

D.W. Griffith x Orson Welles = Erich von Stroheim

Norman Kerry x 80% = David Manners

Basil Rathbone x 70% + Claude Rains x 60% = Colin Clive

Boris Karloff + Bela Lugosi x Peter Lorre = Conrad Veidt

Gloria Swanson x Jean Harlow - Mae West = Jane Russell

in order to test the accuracy of my calculations, I performed a proof in each case. They worked out perfectly except for the last one. This is the result when I attempted a proof:

Jane Russell + Mae West x Jean Harlow divided by Gloria Swanson = Julian Eltinge

Can anybody help me locate the error of this calculation? Thanks.

I think you have the two functions switched. This one should work:

(Mae West - Jean Harlow) x Gloria Swanson = Jane Russell

Not sure about the original calculations. I'd have said

Lee Marvin = Steve McQueen + James Coburn.

George Bancroft + Victor McLaglen = Major Surgery + Six months in traction

Steve McQueen + Motorcycle = Bud Ekins

Buster Keaton-Buster Keaton = Al St John.....
I could use some digital restoration myself...

Thanks CoffeDan for uncovering the error in my calculations. Here are a few more:

Sidney Toler + Key Luke = Warner Oland

However:

Sidney Toler - Keye Luke = Roland Winters

Likewise:

Basil Rathbone + Nigel Bruce = Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

But:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Basil Rathbone = Philo Vance

Using animal stars:

Rex the Wonder Horse + Rin Tin Tin = King Kong

But:

King Kong - Rex the Wonder Horse = Mighty Joe Young

Adding titles to the equations renders some surprising results:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle + Jurassic Park = Plagiarism Lawsuit

Little Caesar + The Petrified Forest = Key Largo

Gone With The Wind - Reap the Wild Wind = So Red The Rose

Finally, using studios:

MGM - Paramount = Monogram

Okay, my turn now:

William Powell + Clive Brook = Basil Rathbone

Bela Lugosi² + Harpo Marx = Tod Slaughter

Edward Arnold - Conrad Nagel = Guy Kibbee

William Haines - Charles Ray = Rin-Tin-Tin

Just because they sleuth similarly doesn't make them enough alike. You're missing a term here:

(William Powell + Clive Brook) - alcohol = Basil Rathbone

Of all the frivolous threads to turn into a fight...

I have removed several posts that took this way too personally and got way too angry for an amusing trifle, as well as a few that made no sense without that context.

Let's keep it calm, folks. It's just fun. Have some perspective.

You may have a point, but I was thinking in terms of suavity, not sleuthing. If you reverse the equation to:

Basil Rathbone - Clive Brook = William Powell

I think you'll see what I mean. An even better example:

Basil Rathbone - William Powell = Clive Brook

Actually for me, it would be
Basil Rathbone + Clive Brook = William Powell

How about:

Basil Rathbone + Lionel Atwill = Colin Clive

However:

Basil Rathbone + Colin Clive = Lionel Atwill on steroids

Come on in, Louie, anyone can play!

Marlon Brando - James Dean = Montgomery Clift

Just jump in anywhere!

Joan Blondell x (Edna May Oliver + Helen Broderick) = Eve Arden
