Man with John Gilbert in this photo?
Does anyone know who he is, or is he significant, or just a person posing with Jack?

It's Peter Lorre.
My guess is 1935 just as Lorre arrived in the US and at Columbia. Gilbert had already completed his last picture there (released Nov.'34) but would not do another before dying in Jan of '36. Short lived friendship at best.

how can you tell. It doesn't look like Pete. If it is , you're really sharp.

The link above goes to a site that confirms Lorre's co-starring role in the publicity photo.

It is a young Peter Lorre.

Momsne, you're the Miss Marple of Nitrateville. This is where I got the pic from so I guess the photo is reciprocative between several links or people just uploading from the same source. Lotsa great stuff too.momsne wrote:http://tsutpen.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html" target="_blank" target="_blank

Not much, for sure. The clothes, the posture, something, make him look like a chubby, heavy-set gent--the antithesis of Mr. Moto.sepiatone wrote:how can you tell. It doesn't look like Pete.

The pedant in me feels compelled to note that while CAPTAIN HATES THE SEA was indeed Gilbert's last feature, he did appear as himself in one of those Louis Lewyn Technicolor shorts from the 1935-36 season. Can't remember which one, and it's not listed on the IMDb, but he's definitely in it and identified as such by the narrator.stairstars wrote:It's Peter Lorre.

Lorre was pretty chunky in M and in his American debut, Mad Love. Mad Love was released by MGM in 1935, which makes his appearance with Gilbert even more plausible.entredeuxguerres wrote:Not much, for sure. Yes, and he was a snappy dresser, too.
Not sure LB would just let him on the MGM lot to pal around with the new help, which is why I think they might have met at Columbia. Possibly, Gilbert was hoping for more work or there were even discussions. Just speculation, of course.

Here he is in a 1931 comedy, only a few years earlier.
If I recall correctly, Lorre only lost weight because he got very sick, and the studios had to work hard to keep him thin.
