Allan Dwan retro at MoMA

Post by Lokke Heiss » Thu Jun 20, 2013 6:01 pm

Long overdue (they brought it up themselves, saying the last retro of his work there was in the 70s, with Dwan in attendance!)
Allan Dwan is getting a month of films at the museum, titled: Allan Dwan and the Rise and Decline of the Hollywood Studios.

They've gone through most of his silents and have already started on his talkies. Over 400 films in all, and they're not going to get to them all, but they're showing most of his better known talkies, at the rate of about three a week.

Can Nitratevillains name off some of the favorite talkle Dwan films?

Lost films eligible? If so, what I've read of What a Widow makes me sure it would have been my favorite.

Trail of the Vigilantes (1940) is a great comic western with Franchot Tone.

And i'll chime in with Panthea, which would also make my most desired lost silents list, what with being Norma Talmadge's breakout film and having Stroheim in the cast as well (there's a scene described in reviews that exactly matches a scene in The Merry Widow, which would be interesting to see). This did exist as late as the 1958.

Did Fifty-Fifty show in the retrospective? That's one i haven't been able to catch up with yet.

Just saw Douglas Fairbank's The Iron Mask (for the first time) tonight. I thought his cheerful flirting with costar Marguerite De La Motte was some of the best stuff he ever did, but boy, did things get serious after that! Come on now, admit it-how many of you out there got completely choked up at the end?
