Is this dvd "in the Vessel With the Pestle?"

Post by Phillyrich » Mon Jul 29, 2013 10:48 am

Why is Danny Kaye's "The Court Jester" unavailable on dvd? Used copies cost big bucks.
Some clips are on youtube HD, from a very nice clean transfer.

It's a Paramount film; I noticed when "El Dorado" came out in a deluxe package a few years back--it suddenly disappeared. It's also a Paramount. Is the back library caught up in legal issues? The Paramount folks deserve to drink the poison-- in the Flagon with the Dragon.

P.S. Does anyboy know what Bob Hope-Martha Raye film the "tongue twister" jokes started?

The Bob Hope movie is NEVER SAY DIE (1939) and is a particular favorite of mine. Based on an Owen Davis play, I don't know if the routine originated with the play or was written for the film. If memory serves, the routine went, "There's a nick on the handle of the pistol with the bullet, and a cross on the muzzle of the pistol with the blank." Sounds simple.

Amazon Prime members can video stream THE COURT JESTER for free.

Most of the big studios think that, except for very high-profile films, their back-catalog doesn't sell well enough. If Paramount has a hi-def master, it might eventually be licensed to Olive Films. Then again, Paramount could have a change of heart and release it themselves. I got my DVD when it was still in print, fortunately.

Warner Home Video has begun handling a number of catalogue titles from the Paramount library, including some lesser-profile films being reissued as part of the Warner Archive. It's always possible that The Court Jester will eventually be among them, probably in the latter category.

I think I've heard a similar routine in something older - but the "Pellet with the Poison" version is flawless.
