Columbia's Screen Snapshots

Post by Harlett O'Dowd » Thu Aug 15, 2013 12:39 pm

I think I've asked this before, but it doesn't hurt to ask again.

I'm wondering if anyone (individual or archive) has any of the Screen Snapshots series.

Specifically, I'm seeking Series 14, Number 1 (September 1934)

At least, I *think* that's it. It concentrates on the children of the stars (one or both of Joe E Brown's adopted daughters, etc.) and was filmed mid-1934.

Capitolfest has run a couple so I know they exist. I can't offer any leads, but good luck.

I've got a couple of them in 16mm, but that doesn't sound familiar.

There are prints out there. I've viewed several in 16mm and 35mm at The Library of Congress over the years. Also I know of a few collectors who own 16mm prints. And I have several myself on video.
But I haven't seen the one you're asking about. The LoC has material on many of them, but not viewing prints. They may have that one.

This is what I have on that Screen Snapshots short:
Series 14, Number 1.
Release Date: September 29, 1934.
Approximately 11 minutes.
Title: HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS.
Produced by Harriet Parsons.
Cast:
Helen Morgan
Johnny Weissmuller
Lupe Velez
Louella Parsons and husband
Edmund Lowe
Genevieve Tobin
Vivian Tobin
Clark Gable and wife
Douglass Montgomery
Warren William
Isabel Jewell
Lewis Stone
Joan Marsh
Fred Keating
Inez Courtney
Regis Toomey and wife
Miriam Jordan
Jackie Cooper
Alison Skipworth
Walter Connolly
Lewis Milestone
Florence Rice
Leon Errol
Wynne Gibson
John Gilbert
The Three Stooges
Victor McLaglen
Duke Gallagher
Patricia Hawks
Joe E. Brown's two daughters
Helen Twelvetrees and son
Barbara Bebe Lyon (Bebe Daniels' daughter)
Mrs. Richard "Skeets" Gallagher, her son and daughter
Arline Judge and son
Miriam Hopkins and son

There doesn't appear to be much involving children of stars. Here's what happens in the short:
Shown arriving at a train station meeting Louella Parsons and her husband are Helen Morgan, Johnny Weissmuller and Lupe Velez. Also at the train station: Edmund Lowe, Genevieve and Vivian Tobin, and Mr. & Mrs. Clark Gable.
Douglass Montgomery is shown at home.
Shown at a sailing regatta are Warren William on his own schooner, Isabel Jewell, Lewis Stone on his boat, Joan Marsh, Regis Toomey, Fred Keating and Inez Courtney.
Jackie Cooper shown filming TREASURE ISLAND (1934 MGM Picture) on ship.
Stars of 1934 Columbia Picture THE CAPTAIN HATES THE SEA are shown clowning around on that movie's ship: Alison Skipworth, Walter Connolly, Director Lewis Milestone, Wynne Gibson, Leon Errol, John Gilbert, The Three Stooges, Victor McLaglen, and also Florence Rice.
The short finishes with a party for babies and kids of stars Joe E. Brown, Helen Twelvetrees, Bebe Daniels, Skeets Gallagher, Arline Judge, and Miriam Hopkins.

Much snippage.
Wow Richard! Yes, that's the short I'm seeking. Does anyone have it?

There are at least TWO Screen Snapshots from the early 30s on Columbia/Sony/TCM DVDs--the one disc that comes to mind right now is the recent BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN. The other title slips my mind at the moment.

They ARE great shorts!

I didn't know about Screen Snapshots on those DVD's. Please let us know if you can find out which ones they are.
There is a 1931 Screen Snapshot short included as an extra on the DVD of the 1939 Columbia Picture GOLDEN BOY.

A long shot but I might as well give it a try...

I'm looking for Series-21 Short #8 released 4/6/42...a music short featuring a song by Groucho Marx. I 'd love to get a copy in any format, or at least ask a question to someone who's seen it.
