Dark Crimes Noir Set
TCM is having a sale on its catalogue this weekend. (use the code "clock14" for 20% off).
I'm thinking of buying the set: "DARK CRIMES," with The Glass Key 1942 , Phantom Lady, 1944 and The Blue Dahlia 1946 .
Anybody have this set? What do you think of it? Are the prints first rate?

If you're the least bit interested in this set, you probably know more about it than you think you do.
So what's stopping you? Buy it.

I have the set. The print of "The Blue Dahlia" is the best I've ever seen. "The Glass Key" is also beautiful. I remember watching "Phantom Lady", but I don't remember its condition. I'm sure that it was great, though. I thought the set really a great way to replace my old VHS tapes, but I bought this nearly two years ago.Phillyrich wrote:TCM is having a sale on its catalogue this weekend. I've been searching for this set for a couple of years. All I need to know is if it has captioning or not.

I believe there is no captioning on this set. Check the Glenn Erickson review at dvd savant.

"The one major disappointment is the absence of closed captioning or English subtitles. The very large hearing-impaired audience is just the customer base that looks to home video of vintage films for entertainment."

I posted on this subject mainly because the reviews of the dvd transfers are so divided. Amazing range of opinion on the quality of the visual product-- from "excellent transfers" way down to "vhs" quality.
Is TCM so sloppy in its product?
Well, I bought them anyway (: ).

DVD Savant says "excellent" and I'm inclined to believe him. Unfortunately, a few years ago I'd already bought the UK DVDs of The Glass Key and The Blue Dahlia, which are fine Universal transfers, and I'm guessing these are probably the same, only without the NTSC -> PAL speedup (which I don't have a serious problem with anyway). Left me kind of high and dry for Phantom Lady though, which I've only seen on VHS.Phillyrich wrote:I posted on this subject mainly because the reviews of the dvd transfers are so divided. Strike that set off my to-buy list...
Thanks, Rick and Stephen.

DVD beaver has screen captures of both the TCM set and the British Region 2 transfers. Both look acceptable, but the British transfers seem to have richer dark tones.
