Actor ID help: Gold Diggers of '33

Somebody's trying to establish the identity of this bit player from Gold Diggers of 1933. He appears in the film as "First Hat Delivery Guy", with Sterling Holloway as the second guy.

Maynard Holmes and Grady Sutton have both been suggested and ruled out.

That looks like Maynard Holmes who appeared in a number of WB films in the mid 1930s. His most prominent role was probably as the Dauphin in MADAME DU BARRY (1934), a Dolores del Rio vehicle. Both the facial expression and the cap makes ID tricky.

Not much respect in H'wood for Louis XVI; overweight dim-bulbs apparently had a lock on the part.

Bob, many thanks for your suggestion, but after comparing the screenshot with images of Holmes, he's definitely not the one.

Ok, and it's definitely not Grady Sutton. Guess we've settled who it's not! Reminds of the time I checked into an actor in CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (1936) who played one of Flynn's buddies. There wasn't any mystery because the fellow received screen credit but CHARGE seems to have been his only film.

Is it perhaps Joe Cobb from the Our Gang comedies. He made a few movies as an adult and this looks something like the photos I have seen of an older Joe.

Cobb seems like a good bet. The nose is very similar here.

Both of these two recently-posted photos look as though Joe's head has been Photoshopped onto someone else's body.

I'm not saying that's what happened. I'm saying it looks like the head just isn't the one that originally came with the body. Strange discrepancy there.

Not Joe Cobb. Cobb was chubbier, and only 16 when this film was made. This guy looks older, thinner, and has totally different ears.

He looks like Duke York's chubby cousin!

I just checked the two photos with a photo editing program. When a photo is altered it shows up in its "histogram" as jagged/sharp lines. A photo could show this for any change, as far as I know. The histogram of the person in short sleeves shows there has been something altered. Whether it's the head of the person, I don't know.

The other photo with the hand raised shows no alteration in its histogram.

...if Newt Gingrich was about 30 years older...

Thanks, Rick. I feel vindicated! :D

The angle of the head on the short-sleeved guy also doesn't match up with the angle of the body.

I met Joe Cobb once at a Hal Roach retrospective in Pasadena. If he was 4'5" he was wearing lifts.
